Beginning Quilting Paper Piecing

English paper piecing originated in England in the 1700s.  The oldest English Paper Pieced quilt dated in the United States dated around 1807-1813.  During America's Pioneer days, "paper" quilting became very popular.  Interestingly, paper was scarce in early America and women often saved letters, newspaper clippings and catalog pages to create patterns.  In many cases, paper templates were not removed from the quilt, the paper serving a dual purpose of history - papers found in old quilts have preserved fist-hand glimpses into pioneer life!

In recent years this technique has been updated using modern conveniences (pre-cut paper pieces and fabrics, acrylic templates, fabric glues etc). but the basic procedure is the same.  While the hexagon (now referred to as a "hexi"), is the shape most commonly associated with English Paper Piecing, many other shapes are used - half hexagon, elongated hexagons, clam shell, triangles, pentagons, etc.

In the class, you will learn from our one newest instructors, Barbara Lockwood, how to make & perfect this traditional technique.  You will be making 1-1/2” hexi paper pieced squares to make a coaster which can then be later applied to other quilting projects.  Create incredible quilts using this design while learning about the foundation of paper-piecing.

Please bring your own:

- Basic sewing tools:  scissors/rotary, pins, good quality thread
- Hand sewing needles and thimble.
- 1 1/2” Hexie Paper Piecing paper templates

- 1 Felt Square
