Machine Embroidery Applique Winter Session
The technique of applique has been around for almost 2500 years. The word applique comes from the French meaning "applied, fastened to as a decorative feature, as a sconce, applied to a surface". Applique began as a practical way to mend holes in tents, blankets, and clothing. Examples date back to the ancient Egyptians and Middle Ages. The process was used to strengthen worn fabrics, patch holes, and add decorative flair to banners and ceremonial costumes. Modern day, applique is essentially the technique of sewing or fusing fabric pieces or patches of different shapes and patterns to make a larger piece or form a picture or pattern. There are many ways to applique - hand (including needle turn, freezer paper, outline on wrong side and iron under), Raw Edge Fused and Machine Applique (fused to a background with a decorative machine stitch applied around the edge of the shape.
