Circle Ahead: Practicing Mindful Consumption



Join us for an engaging & informative talk about mindful consumption practices.  In this lecture/discussion, we will be joined by esteemed guests Wati & Mary Lynn to learn about and strategize about ways we can personally reduce waste, design, create and cultivate a mindful, fashionable closet.  

Join us for a light breakfast and a great discussion to become enlightened and educated on how we can personally reduce waste and build a community of other like minded creatives!



Wati & Mary Lynn are true change agents, believing that in community there is power; change happens when we are connected and care about each other; and small acts are significant and critical. In their work together, they host local Clothing Swap Events to build community and inspire activism.  They also educate and increase awareness of fashion sustainability and mindful consumption.


During the discussion: 
- Wati & Mary Lynn will share their fascinating backgrounds, the magazine 
Circle Ahead and Clothing Swaps
- They will cover the main reasons why we should practice mindful consumption, what a Swap Circle is and how it is a project of Circle Ahead
- They will share the concept of the “Mindful Closet”, including identifying your goals, clearing out and categorizing, rebuilding and maintaining your wardrobe
- We will lead discussion on tips for repair and repurposing and take questions from the audience

The event will include a light breakfast and refreshments!

Instructor: Wati & Mary Lynn
Instructor Bio: Wati Grossman and Mary Lynn Fitton are the creators of Swap Circle. They love sustainable fashion and want to add to the growing movement worldwide to reduce, reuse and repurpose clothing for the good of the planet and humankind. Wati Grossman is a former Australian lawyer. She is a 35-year design veteran in the American fashion industry. Her decades of experience encompass every stage of the design and manufacturing process, but her true expertise is as a technical designer and patternmaker in men’s, women's and children’s wear. For more than a decade she ran her own popular eponymous label Wati Design specializing in children's wear. She edits and is the publisher of the fashion sustainability magazine Circle Ahead which encourages mindful consumption and promotes the appreciation of well-loved, passed-on, vintage and second-hand garments and accessories. Mary Lynn Fitton, RN, MS, FNP founded The Art of Yoga Project (AYP) in 2005, a non-profit bringing trauma-informed yoga and creative arts to system-involved youth. She is a nurse practitioner (UC-San Francisco) with specialties in neuroscience, women’s and adolescent health. A certified yoga teacher since 1998 and international speaker, her work has been featured in the Washington Post, NPR, Yoga Journal, The San Francisco Examiner, The Mercury News, the International Journal of Yoga Therapy, and The Huffington Post. Currently, Mary Lynn works with local artists to create the art curricula at AYP for 30 sites in the San Francisco Bay Area. She has been doing clothing swaps her entire adult life and feels grateful to have joined with Wati to create Swap Circle.
