Skills Builder: Buttonholes & Beyond

Have you ever used the buttonhole stitch on your machine? Are you experiencing the “fear factor” when attempting to make buttonholes? Join our experts to help overcome your fears and make buttonholes like a pro!

In this class we will:

- review different types of buttonholes (regular, keyhole, etc.), horizontal vs. vertical placement, as well as methods & tips to make buttonholes on your machine.

- tools and methods: importance of stabilizer/interfacing and thread to prevent puckering and uneven stitching as well as measuring and marking tools (seam gauge, chalk/pen, etc.)

- techniques for precise placement including measuring button diameter plus 1/8” for ease, equal distancing for shirt fronts, etc.

- using your machine to make the stitch - measuring the buttonhole, selecting the stitch, attaching the foot, adjusting the proper settings and sewing the buttonhole windowpane.

- “The cut” - how to safely cut the space between the buttonhole windowpane without over-cutting into the bar tacks.

- Using your machine or hand stitching buttons.

- Trouble shooting and correcting mistakes. The importance of doing a trial run!

For class you will need to bring a sewing machine with automatic 1-step buttonhole stitches, your buttonhole foot, thread & new sewing machine needle. Bring your creation or fabric you want to test on!

Minimum Class Size: We reserve the right to cancel this class if there are less than two students signed up for the class. We will let you know 24 hours in advance if we do not have enough students and will give you an opportunity to sign up for an alternative class.

You may cancel class up to 24 hrs in advance of your class start time; after which you will forfeit your class fee unless we can fill your spot from the waiting list, or you can send a friend.
